Will wild birds eat dried crab-apples?

I have a flowering crab-apple tree that has just dropped around 1,000 little crab-apples. I just raked them up and was going to throw them away. I feed the birds all year round with sunflower seed and was wondering if I dried some of them, would the birds eat them this winter?

They might peck at them a bit. However, crab apples have very little actual fruit, and are mostly core and skin after you dry them.


In addition, apple seeds can be deadly to birds.


I dry actual slices of apple fruit for our birds and they really like it. It does tend to be a bit tough though, so I have to cut it up for them.

Reply:I found out that deer WILL eat them, and I knew from what you told me that the deer would get more out of them. I hauled them to a big field that I see them in all the time and scattered them. Thanks for helping me figure out what to do with the two wheelbarrows full! Report It
