I have just moved into a new house with two young magnolia trees. They have lots of buds, but they turn brown within a day of blooming. We live in northern California with lots of sun and not much rain, but we run our irrigation system daily. Is it drying out, or over-watered, or something else entirely?
Why are my magnolia flowers turning brown?
Depending on what kind of Magnolia tree you have, it may be a perfectly natural occurence. I live in Tennessee and have three 50' tall Magnolia trees. Their blooms usually last two days then turn brown. I am sure your magnolias are a different kind than the ones I have. There are many varieties for different climes.
Reply:sun is overtaking them, find hardy trees that can survive the heat and lack of water.
Reply:I had the same problem. You should plant the tree in some good quality potting soil. This way the soil will time-release water and nutrients to make sure it gets what it needs when it needs it. Regular topsoil tends to clump up. You can check out http://www.1800topsoil.com to see if they have good stuff for your climate. They are national, so they may have someone local. Good luck!
Reply:most likely they are drying out the only way to tell is if they feel dry and they wilt
