Will wild birds eat dried crab-apples?

I have a flowering crab-apple tree that has just dropped around 1,000 little crab-apples. I just raked them up and was going to throw them away. I feed the birds all year round with sunflower seed and was wondering if I dried some of them, would the birds eat them this winter?

Will wild birds eat dried crab-apples?
They might peck at them a bit. However, crab apples have very little actual fruit, and are mostly core and skin after you dry them.

In addition, apple seeds can be deadly to birds.

I dry actual slices of apple fruit for our birds and they really like it. It does tend to be a bit tough though, so I have to cut it up for them.

Good luck.
Reply:I found out that deer WILL eat them, and I knew from what you told me that the deer would get more out of them. I hauled them to a big field that I see them in all the time and scattered them. Thanks for helping me figure out what to do with the two wheelbarrows full! Report It

Reply:Probably, at least for the seeds inside.

Where can i go to get ideas for a wedding?
The best advice is to just look around the try to incorporate that into a fall wedding. I was married October 8 of this year, and half of the stuff was improvised.

Our cake had fake leaves on it, and it looked great. It was simply wonderful.

Shop around NOW for sales on baskets, fall-themed ivy and leaves, and flowers.

By careful with dried flowers, because they will have to last you about 6 hours without falling to bits. Just a bit of caution: you're going to have to carry fragile flowers that may fall apart halfway to the alter.

For centerpieces, try a pumpkin/flower arrangement or have a pumpkin carving party the day before (or a few days before) and use those pumpkins.

Basically, you just have to chose what you want to do. Do you want to go with a natural theme--leaf/pumpkin? Do you want to go with the color theme?

All-in-all, just look around in books and magazines and go from there.

How do I screw the dog into my hair drier without disrupting the sleeping flower pot?

I am so perturbed, I just don't know what to make of this circumstance. If he wakes, the sun will drip anti-freeze into my eye!! This may cause horrible things, like war between the French and Eskimos by snapping the piece treaty in half, it's so tastey the ants will eat it first. If he sleeps, global warming will subside, and I'd really like to save the Earth before breasts shrivel up and fall off.

Does anyone know how to dry hydrangeas properly?

When is the best time to cut the flowers and what is the best method of drying them please.I cut some a fortnight ago, but they've just shrivelled rather than dried.

Does anyone know how to dry hydrangeas properly?
While it is tempting to cut the hydrangea blossoms for drying at the height of their color, this seldom, if ever, works. Fresh, recently opened blooms, rarely dry well in the open air. Hydrangeas do best when allowed to dry a bit on the plant before picking. Experiment with harvesting from August through October.

It is not necessary to hang them unless they have weak stems.

Here is a link to help you with drying fresh ones for colour.

http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/dryi...
Reply:Unlike yourself, I have never had any trouble drying hydrangea. They are the easiest. simply hang them upside down and they will retain their shape. A cool, dry, dark or muted room is the best. After they are dry spray them with a matte or glossy clear spray paint, depending on your preference. will help them last FOREVER
Reply:I leave mine on the bush 'til they have dried themselves out.
Reply:Hi Wonder Women. I adore them fresh or dried.

This is a good time to dry them ,as they are now in all there Glory.

What I do is cut them and stand them in warm water with lots of sugar. I leave them for about 3/4 days. I then take them out, dry the stems with kitchen paper and hang them upside down in the airing cupboard for a month or two or untill your ready to use them.

What I like to do is at Christmas, spray them with either silver or gold paint and maybe add some glitter. They look wonderful

on any table or in an arrangement.

W.W. this method works for most flowers.

Have a go and enjoy.

Wedding flowers?

I recently got married, and at the moment my wedding flowers are in the fridge, but they cant stay there forever, i want to know how to keep them nice, when dried out so that i can keep them nicely presented, maybe even put it in a glass box of some kind.

Wedding flowers?
It depends on how much you want to spend, of course, but here is an example of what a good friend of mine did with her wedding flowers....

Also, some local florists seem to have their own floral preservation companies they work with. I know that for our family funerals each grandchild/child gets a funeral rose out of the casket spray in a flat bottomed paperweight made of some sort of resin. They look quite nice, that might work for you, too.
Reply:Found a website that gives you some different ways to preserve them, and the approximate time each type of flower might take. Good luck! I hope it works.

How to revive a heather shrub?

I let my heather shrub dry out (still potted) and the pink flowers are completely dry and so are the leaves (needles). I scraped the bark at the base of the plant with my finger nail to see if there was any indication of life underneath but was mostly dry. The stem is still somewhat flexible. Does that mean the plant is still alive and can be revived? Any info would help. Thank you.

How to revive a heather shrub?
A live plant, when scratched to reveal the layer below the bark, will show green. If you cut across the stem it would show a ring of light green around a white or pale center. Start just beyond the main stem and work your way toward the base of the stem. When you see green where you scratch you have a living point on the plant. If don't see green anywhere the the plant is dead and any further treatment is probably hopeless.

However not all plants have a thick layer or bark so don't scratch to hard at first.

Just in case the roots are still alive it might be worth a good stimulant like compost tea, garrett juice, or alfalfa tea. However it may be less stressful to begin again

Saving potted mums for spring?

i have some potted mums that i want to save to plant in the spring. hoping that they will bloom in the fall. the flowers are drying, but the folliage is still green.

Saving potted mums for spring?
That means they are still good. Cut off the dead flowers and do not over water. Keep in light and plant in the spring. They will bloom late summer. I live in socal, so i can leave them out. I put a good amount of mulch around them in the winter.

How do I avoid moths hatching in my homemade potpourri?

I pick flowers from my garden and dry them naturally, without using a microwave or oven. After a few months moths hatch out and start to eat the flowers. I have tried freezing the dried material for a period of time before making the potpourri but still end up with moths.

How do I avoid moths hatching in my homemade potpourri?
I would try a solution of 1/2 water and 1/2 bleach and mist the flowers with a spray bottle and then let them dry out naturally. This should eliminate the moth larvae, and the bleach will degrade on it's own as the flowers dry.
Reply:YOU COULD RINSE THE FLOWERS WELL BEFORE YOU DRY THEM. POSSIBLE WITH VINEGAR WATER RINSE.

Giving flowers more life?

maybe something you find around the house?

Giving flowers more life?
My daughter used to be a florist and she would put flowers in the fridge for a few hours .It usually freshened them up quite well. It's a good idea to cut the stem everyday too.It helps the flower to take up the water in your vase.A drop of bleach keeps the water fresh too
Reply:If you put a 1p coin in the water, the copper gives off a residue which kills off the bacteria that grows in the water that kills off the flowers.

A flowering preservation method that retains color?

I want to dry some of my spring flowers, but I'm looking for a method that will help retain the colors. Pressing won't work, and neither will just air drying them. Does anyone have a technique that they have used? I want to do it at home, so don't tell me freeze drying!

A flowering preservation method that retains color?
I don't think you're going to be able to preserve the color completely. When flowers dry their color will change slightly no matter what you do. Even freeze drying leaves a slight change in color.

My recommendation would be to dry them with any method you want (see http://extension.missouri.edu/xplor/aggu... for directions), then spray the flowers with a fixative (from the craft store) and then paint the flowers to a bright color again. I know it's cheating, but at least you'll have the colors you want. You'll have to be VERY careful that you don't damage the dried flowers when you paint them.

put them in a phonebook for 24 hours with a couple peices of paper towels that are just barely moist then put them in the picture frame with a peices of white paper behind and let them sit glass side up for 1-2 days and then hang them.It worked for me so it will work for you.Good Luck with pressing.
Reply:They will dry out in a picture frame. Go to a craft shop and see if they have a fixative to preserve petals.

any basil and rosemary and I don't ever have to dry them now that i live in a desert

I used to have chives but my younger cat eats to the nub so never last ;D
Reply:Coriander. I love it. Chop up two tomatoes, red onion and coriander( I have at least two tablespoons), squeeze the juice of one lemon or lime on it, add teaspoon of brown sugar, some salt and pepper and mix well and put it in the fridge for 15 minutes. I have this with any curry instead of rice. It is refreshing, healthy and yummy, try it!
Reply:Mine are curry leaf trees and lemon grass. Apart from being full of flavour, they are hardy and need very little care in the Indian climate. Besides, they have healing qualities.

Curry leaves make a great garnish. I heat a little cooking oil, then add a large pinch of mustard seeds. When they crackle, I put in some curry leaves and a couple of pieces of dried red pepper. I either stir this garnish into cooked vegetables or saute vegetables in it.

Curry leaves are very good for the liver and also regulate blood pressure. However, they are said to need an oily or acidic base to be effective. We sometimes leave them steeped in buttermilk for an hour or so for a refreshing drink. .

Lemon grass is a popular addition to Indian tea (chai). We boil it in the water along with the tea leaves. The grass can also be dried and preserved. Sometimes we put dried, chopped-up lemon grass along with the tea in the storage bin.

Lemon grass soothes the throat and cheers you up!
Reply:Spicy Globe Basil - incredible scent, delicious in salad

Lemon Thyme - salad, soup, chicken

They all flower. If you want to use the herb for cooking, Don't allow it to flower. When they go to seed, they stop producing leaves for cullinary use, go dormant for a while....
Reply:I loved growing marjoram, it has little flowers but you're not really supposed to let them go to flower. I hung them upside down. The only thing I miss about having a house is the garden. I used to fry whole fish in butter with the herbs, so good.
Reply:Rosemary - the scent is just awesome and the purple flowers are an added plus. I use them when baking chicken, making tomato sauce, and on the grill barbecuing chicken or pork.

Peppermint - the scent is invigorating and it's so easy to grow. I just add a few springs to hot tea or use the leaves as garnish in desserts.

Basil - my all time favorite. I pick the leaves and put them in soups and sauces. They're also great when added to fresh tossed salad with balsamic vinagrette dressing.
Reply:my wife grows rosemary

When ever we need some we go outside and snip some off
Reply:My chives are blooming right now. I use them in salads, some soups or sauces, on top of my potatoes......

I have a chocolate mint that tastes great, tolerates neglect, and smells wonderful. It blooms sporadically.

I love my lemon basil, especially with seafood. It blooms sporadically.

hmmmm, not sure if this is classified as an herb: I have a nice busy orange habanero plant that has produced peppers nearly continuously for two year now. I keep it in a pot by my front porch. It's blossoms are small, but the peppers look great. My husband loves the peppers with any food that needs some heat. My neighbors come by and take peppers anytime they want. (I live in Florida, so I leave it outside year-round unless we have a rare hard freeze warning.)
Reply:cilantro and thyme love those. I use them on chicken for pesto, corn bread all types of cooking. so far I only use them fresh, I have never dried them. I grow about 15 different herbs all together though.

Maybe you could make a "tussie mussie." This is a Victorian era nosegay made from dried flowers. I've made several over the years from roses or flowers given to me on special occasions. They look great to top stacks of books or just to lay in front of framed photos. I've also used the dried petals to make and/or enhance the look of homemade potpourri. Just freshen the scent occasionally.

Need ideas for flowers for a SOUTH-facing windowbox that has some shade. They either wilt yellow or don't bloom

I'm from midwest (Ohio) and I've tried so many things to no avail. I even tried Impatiens, which likes alot of shade! Maybe I'm over-watering (?) but seems like every time I checked box for water is was bone dry. Any suggestions would be much appreciated...

Need ideas for flowers for a SOUTH-facing windowbox that has some shade. They either wilt yellow or don't bloom
~ Do you have holes drilled in the bottom of the box for drainage? If not then it really sounds like soggy roots. One way to prevent this is instead of planting the plants right into the box, keep the plants in 6" pots lined up in the box and fill in the spaces with moss or mulch. This allows the plants to drain and not get transplant shock.

The other way if you don't want to drill holes in the bottom is to take out the dirt and add at least 2" of Styrofoam peanuts (not the biodegradable kind) or gravel to the bottom so that the water drains out of the soil and the roots won't get too soggy.

As for plants, Try a combination of Wave Petunias (Walmart and has them) which do well in partial shade and keep blooming all season long. They also will drape over the sides. Then add some light pink geraniums and a few marigolds for contrast. Some Miracle grow as they recommend will help as well.
Reply:geraniums are pretty good, if you are planting in a box it will dry out quickly, so water away. Impatience can be difficult to grow sometimes. Begonia are also pretty hardy and keep on blooming.

good luck

If you've made marzipan shapes[flowers, animals, ect]do you use egg whites to ... ??
An egg white wash on marzipan won't really harden the surface much, certainly not enough to strengthen it. In fact, if you use an egg white glaze on your marzipan, you will have to handle it even more carefully when the glaze dries, as it can crack easily. The main reason for the egg white glaze is for appearance. If it's strength you're seeking in your marzipan, allowing your figures to dry thoroughly is your best bet.

Foam tape that you can get in craft or office supply stores. It will lift the items off the background. You can layer several pieces together to even add more dimension. (it's double sided).
Reply:two sided sticky tape or hot glue
Reply:Glue Dots are great. You can find them at any craft store. You can get them in different strengths. From low tack(if this is something you want to take apart later) or super high tack for a permanent fix. Hope this helps. Good luck:)
Reply:Depending on what you are mounting, try decorative brads, scrap booking eyelets or scrap booking brads. Some of them are very pretty or you can get plain colored ones and they all come in a variety of sizes and colors. Hope this helps you out.
Reply:There is also something called sticky tack - it is blue and it is tacky - sort of like silly putty. You will find at a craft store, maybe the grocery store, it is fairly easy to find. Otherwise, you might try a picture frame and make a collage of the items, as long as they are mostly flat.

I got a lovely valentine's bouquet. I want to keep it fresh for as long as I can, what should I do with the water? I'm changing it every day, and I heard adding sugar is a good idea.

After that, what's the best way of drying and preserving my lovely flowers?

I really like the guy who sent them, and I want memories.

Thanks!

Preserving Flowers?
the best way to keep this treasure in to take it before it starts to die, tie it like a bouquet, and hang in upsidedown to dry. when it its totaly dry, you can put in in a vase forever.
Reply:Sugar can cause mold, especially in warmer rooms and if the bouquet covers a lot of the vase's lip. My flowers kept fresh for a long by just putting clean tap water in them, and then dried very nicely right in the vase. i keep a very hot room, though, and i have hard tap water.
Reply:Use bleach. Half teaspoon in a small vase, whole teaspoon in a large vase. The ends of the stems should be cut on the diagonal to make larger surface for the water to cover. Some state that sugar works, but it can also cause mold.

Know where to get grants for single moms or ex-abused wives for starting a business growing plants, ect. ?

I really want a freeze dryer, but they are so expensive so I will grow flowers and herbs for medicinal and culinary use. I make flower arrangements and wreaths, ect. from dried flowers that I grow myself. I can't make enough $ doing just that, so I want to also make herbal soaps and such and also sell perennials, herbs, and shrubs. Any grants that I would qualify for ?

Know where to get grants for single moms or ex-abused wives for starting a business growing plants, ect. ?
It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK - lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same - hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html...

"The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business -- THERE'S NONE.

http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALO...

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs -- not for women who wish to start their business)

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

How do you tell a boy not to get you flowers for valentine's day because...?

after a few days, they die and dry out and make a mess.. and you don't feel like cleaning it up. And you would rather have them spend that 60 bucks on something more fun and enjoyable. How do you say it without sounding mean or suggesting you don't like him?

How do you tell a boy not to get you flowers for valentine's day because...?
im sure if you tell him what you want and dont want, he would understand, and it would probably make things easier for him because guys only wanna plaease.

just tell him what you just told us.
Reply:Give him a roundabout answer of "I remember the last time somone gave me flowers for valentines day. They were just so pretty, but it was such a shame because they only lasted a few days, leaving me this dead mess to clean up. I would have so preffered (insert gift of choice here), but I guess he didn't think about it."

If he's trying to be better than your last guy, he'll grab the bait and not get you flowers.
Reply:I feel the same way. The prices for roses skyrocket for one day, and then in just a couple of days they die, and then your left with nothing. When my fiance', and I started dating he got me roses, and especially on sweetest day. But, I told him, as much as I loved them, that it's just not something that I can keep for my gifts from him. So, I ask for something from the heart and not from money. However, if you still get roses, which is still VERY sweet, take a picture of them, and at least that you will always have. That's what I have done. I'm working on a scrapbook, of us since we've been together, so my pics of my roses of the past will be in there.
Reply:Say it exactly like that. Let him know that flowers don't mean as much, because they look nice but die and go away. Spending time together is a much better way to spend money, because the memories will last a lot longer. ;)
Reply:How about like you just did: I don't like getting flowers because they die and then I have to clean them up. I'd rather go on a really fun date for Valentines with you....
Reply:Simple--talk to him! Just come out and tell him that you really don't like getting cut flowers as gifts %26amp; why. Don't be grouchy about it, but just say it. If he's really into you he'll listen, if not, he isn't for you.
Reply:tell him you don't like flowers, but you do like candy..or something along those lines...if you are straight forward and blunt...he'll get the message...if you try to just hint, he won't.......guys don't think the same way as we do....blunt usually works best....

P.S. I don't like messing with flowers either.....lol

Reply:Just make hints. I wouldn't just flat out say...Don't get me flowers. Hint on what you want. If you wanted something like...a massage...Say something like...."My back's been hurting lately, I would LOVE to have a professional massage!" Something along the lines of that. ~Make sure you say professional or he'll give you one! lol! Which sometimes isn't bad, but girls need a little pampering sometimes! : ) Good Luck!

Bougainvillea dropping flowers, only had it for two days!!! HELP?

I just got 3 bougainvilleas from Walmart 2 days ago. I just looked at them and two of them have dropped about half their flowers. One is worse than the other.

Otherwise they look perfectly healthy.

Now, I may well have done this and I have an idea. I have them under shade in the carport and I watered them when I got them.

Will too much water plus shade make them drop their flowers that fast???? Its just the flowers now, not the leaves.

If that is the case I can rest easy because I can just put it out in the sun tomorrow and hope that stops the flower loss. I can let it dry out a bit (didnt mean to overwater it, oops. I didnt realize how sensitive to water they are).

Could this be something else? The stress from moving them in the car maybe???

If you have any ideas whatsoever on what could cause flower drop please let me know! Id be most greatful.

Bougainvillea dropping flowers, only had it for two days!!! HELP?
Well your first problenm is getting them at Wally world(oops Wall Mart) If they are alive it is a miricle.

They shoud be outside in a mostly shady area and kept well watered.

The plants have been stressed just being at that store. If you still have a healthy plant but no flowers, they will reapear soon. Do not put them in the direct sun between 10am and 4pm of they will fry. The plant just needs to stableize, and once that happens, you can use a very weak solution of fertilizer every 2 weeks to keep them blooming.
Reply:This plant doesn't like to be overwatered. Don't fertilize it either. The soil should always be on the dry side. Too dry is not good either.

I know your problem relates to water. Be easy on the water with this plant and you should be much better off.
Reply:That is why i won't have one, nice to look at but wait till they grow!

How to care for potted roses?

I received some roses for Valentine's Day and I've been watering them (a cup of water) every other day. The plant itself is about 7 inches tall or so and I know I shouldn't water the plant too much or anything... but the flowers just seem really dried out. Should I be watering it more or am I drowning it? I'm just worried because I'm in a college dorm and they keep it ridiculously toasty in here. Thanks!

How to care for potted roses?
mist the foliage, that should help until heat is no longer in use.

Help!!! Squirrels are EATING the buds from my hibiscus and other flowers!!?

They seem to like some flowers and others they leave alone. All of my rose buds have been eaten, and they even eat some green leaves from other plants. I have tried the red pepper dry, as well as liquid, and to no avail. I'm not sure but I think they are digging up any bulbs or tubers I plant into pots. Unbelievable the money I've wasted on plants that they destroy either by eating or digging up!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Help!!! Squirrels are EATING the buds from my hibiscus and other flowers!!?
Squirrels really love peanuts and they are not that expensive in the grocery store.. Make a stand away from the flowers and put the peanuts (in the shell) up high so the squirrels will climb for the peanuts. Also you can buy squirrel feeders at the hardware store. Good luck
Reply:I always believed feeding them as an alternative is just encouraging them to stay and invite their neighborhood friends.

It is not an absolute cure, but a determent: lay chicken wire on ground in front of each side of access to the plants. Many animals do not like walking on wire yet it can easily be rolled up to mow. One small area, I planted threw the openings of wire on top of dirt which kept cats out of it.

A neighbor had so much trouble with dogs %26amp; raccoons, he attached a motion detector to water sprinkler. Squirrels don't like the sprinkler either.

A row of sprayed cheap vegetable oil on outside edges reduces weeds, not harmful to environment and bugs/animals do not like getting into it. Don't get the oil to close to your planting roots. This is a good bug deterant around base of house: Spring, Fall %26amp; after each heavy rain.
Reply:Squirrels can be destructive little buggers. If they have a supply of water they may ignore your bulbs and buds. They are not eating them for the nutrition but more for their moisture content. I suggest you fill a birdbath with water, and they may leave your bulbs and plants alone.

How do you dry a single flower in a book?

My great grandmother taught me to do it this way.

Lay the flower flat on tissue paper and arrange the leaves and stem in a pleasing manner. Place a piece of tissue paper on top. Open a thick heavy book to around the center, place a piece of waxed paper on the page to protect the book, lay the flower between the tissue paper on top of that, then place another sheet of waxed paper on top. Gently close the book and place in a dry place for about three days with other books on top.

After three days replace the tissue paper as moisture from the flower being pressed can cause mold, bad smells and attract insects. This may have to be repeated one more time if you have a thick large flower like a rose or a chrysanthemum.

Put fresh tissue paper, new waxed paper and the flower back in the book and continue pressing for one to two weeks.

When properly dried and pressed the flower can be put in a frame behind glass on a fabric field and hung on the wall. It can be put in a memory book, it can be cast in clear resin and hung as a sun-catcher. Good luck with your project and I hope this helps.

How do you dry a single flower in a book?
Just lay it flat in a big book and put a bit of weight on it.
Reply:you stick it in the middle of a book that is heavy and you close it. Place it under a few other heavy books to flatten it. wait a few weeks and open it again. the flower will be flat and dried out.

:)
Reply:Just put it inside the book %26amp; close it. In a short time it will dry out by itself.
Reply:I always put it between 2 sheets of wax paper. Put it in the book with other books stacked on top, %26amp; left it alone for at least a month.

Any craft flower ideas with fresh, dried, pressed or paper mostly rosesor iris?

irises dont dry well, roses you can hang upside down and dry, and make arrangements with them or use them on wreathes, if you have lots of loose petals you can put them in clear jars and turn them into potpourri with rose oil. you can put dry rose petals into paper pulp if you make your own paper, you can press pansies very well and make stationery or greeting cards with them, also seperating the petals of batchleors buttons make good petals for pressing and putting into paper pulp, you could mix them into wax and make candles, you could mix them into soap and mold bars of glycerine soap with your rose petals in them. you can also cook your rose petals, in a cast iron pan and roll the mush into beads and dry them, they smell rosey for years.

Any craft flower ideas with fresh, dried, pressed or paper mostly rosesor iris?
Pressed flowers can be laminated for bookmarks, also you can use dried flowers on wreaths or in corsages. it really depends on what you are willing to do with the flowers
Reply:umm... i think i have 1.

rose petal vase:

1 dozen roses

1 vase

bowl of water

bowl of liquid wax

empty butter containers

peel off the rose petals. soak them in water for about a week. After that hold each rose petal on the vase, and with a brush lightly dab on wax. after you completed that dip the vase in cold water.then, if the water is pink, then put that in small empty butter containers. Then you have a deodorizer!

How do I keep my cat from eating my plants?

I've been growing flowers from seed in my window sill. It is the only good place in the house that recieves sunlight and that has room for the growing lamp I am using. My cat has always had a thing with chewing on flowers, plants, and even dried arrangements but now she is chewing on my newly sprouted seedlings! Is there anything I can do to keep her away from them? (I would prefer not to move them. Like I said, it's the best place in the house that I can find)

How do I keep my cat from eating my plants?
Buy a flat, low-profile planter and plant some grass in it for your cat to chew on. I would get Mondo grass sets or St. Augustine plugs. Rebel (my rebellious cat) would chew on the Mondo grass and let the flowers alone.
Reply:I brought Tipsy (my cat) his own cat grass but he still eats my plants. I just don't know what to do. Report It

Reply:move the plants
Reply:put lemon juice in the plants to keep the cat from eating them.
Reply:get some oat seeds and put little in some soil every week or so, this way they will have fresh grass all the time. Or try giving them some lettuce. My cat eats plants when her grass starts getting old. Take care.
Reply:Real answer? You dont.. cats are cats..(and they will eat plants from time to time.. best bet is just dont have any toxic ones around for em...

How to add life back to my flower bed?? It is very dry!?

My husband and I have purchased this house, and it is our 1st spring/summer season... I found that the front flower bed is very dry... I have planted some tulips in the fall, and they are not coming in great at all...

I have bought a Iris and Peony bush to put in, and found that it is so dry that I can't even dig a hole... Also We have pretty big Maple and some evergreen planted in the flower bed, so there is alot of roots from the trees to make it impossible to dig holes.

Is there any methods that I can add back nutrients/moisture back to my flower bed, so I can plant my peonies/iris?? What kind of soil should I get?

How to add life back to my flower bed?? It is very dry!?
Improving the soil structure is one of the most important aspects of soil care, and adding organic matter is the most effective way to accomplish this. Organic matter also helps maintain the pH balance of the soil and adds nutrients.

Good topsoil is relatively dark in color, active with microorganisms, plant nutrients, and organic matter, and

usually has a pH between 5.5 and 7.5 (for non-acid loving plants).

To improve the soil structure, or tilth, add organic matter in the form of compost, cover crops, or yard waste. Yard waste such as shredded leaves, crop residues, straw, and similar materials should be tilled into the soil in the fall to allow decomposition through the fall and winter. At the same time, grass clippings, manure, or fertilizer should be incorporated to provide the extra nitrogen required to help break down the dry organic materials. This material can be composted and added to the garden in the spring if your prefer.

For soil that is primarily clay or sand, or that has a hard surface crust (water runs off), or is compacted, incorporate 2 to 3 inches of organic matter in the top few inches of soil and mulch liberally for several years. Also, plant cover crops each year until the soil is improved.

Raised beds or terraces are good solutions for improving extremely poor or shallow (bedrock close to surface or topsoil removed during construction) soil or soil with poor drainage. The site can also be graded, then covered with an 8 to 12 inch layer of topsoil - but guard against erosion. Poor drainage can also be helped by installing drainage tile.

Last but not least, mulch with bark or cocoa bean shells after you've planted. It keeps moisture in the soil, so you don't have to water as frequently and prevents weeds from growing. It also looks good!

Good luck!
Reply:I suggest you create a flower bed or several smaller flower beds elsewhere in your yard where tree roots will not be a problem.

Also, the plants you mentioned like sun. And maples produce a thick leaf crown and tend not to like other plants (except little maple trees) growing under them.

As far as the peony bush goes too, you might treat it more as a shrub or bush rather than a perennial. It does not have to be planted in a flower bed, per se. Plant it in a sunny place in your yard where you might want a shrub. Even after flowering, a peony bush looks nice.

You also have to water a flower bed, even if it is made up of largely perennials.

Peonies and iris tend to like rich, loamy soil.
Reply:It sounds as though your flower bed in the front is a bit crowded for more flowers, if you have room to plant more, it sounds as though you will need to add more soil[I like natures helper and maybe some mushroom compost, to the soil rent a tiller[small one for the area] and til in the soil, this will break up the old soil and help to incorporate the new soil. You could build a raised bed for the plants you want, you could also grow in containers. As far as you tulips go I would fig them up and replant them in some pots with better soil. With you having so many trees in your flower bed it is hard for the flowers to get the water and nutrients they need, the trees will drink up the moisture first, you do not want to cover the tree roots with dirt either, it is not good for the trees. Good luck to you, try some sedum, hens%26amp;chicks smaller plants that require dry soil you want have to water very often if you don't want containers or raised beds.

Reply:Harry made some excellent comments. I'd only like to add that you could cover the soil in a good organic mulch, and water periodically. The much will break down and condition your soil. Hold off on planting a flower bed until next spring, and try to select hardy flower that like partial shade (because of the large trees).

If there's no irrigation in the flower bed, you could easily add a couple soaker hoses under the mulch, or consider adding more sprinklers (assuming you have sprinklers in your yard).

After the bird of paradise blooms, and the flower dries up and dies...what do you do with it? clip it off?
If it is a bulb plant then treat it like a tulip. Bend the stem over and put a rubber band around it to keep it bent down and out of sight. If it's not a bulb, then just clip it off. Best wishes
Reply:YES, just clip it off at any length, according to what you think looks best in your garden.

Silk or Freeze Dried Rose Petals for the Flower Girl to toss?

I hate real flowers..so that's out of the question..Please recommend sites to purchase them also..

Silk or Freeze Dried Rose Petals for the Flower Girl to toss?
You'll want to use silk. Once you step on the freeze dried they crumble in to many tiny pieces and if you have a train of any kind on your gown they will become stuck in it. Also sometimes there are still color pigments that can be released when crushed - also getting in to and staining your gown.

Silk petals can be bought at many craft or wedding supply type stores. Try http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displ...
Reply:Especially if it is going to be inside a building, even moreso if they have carpet, use silk, freeze dried and fresh have been known to leave dye/color on the carpet you will spend hours scrubbing out so the church/building doesnt freak.

If it is outside, use freeze dried so they will dispose of themselves within nature.
Reply:silk
Reply:Silk. they'll maintain their shape and of course you can get them in any color.
Reply:any craft stores has many choices of silk petals to toss. It does not really matter. You know flower girls, they may toss just a few, none at all or dump the entire basket at once. Many a flower girls has left the guests with a chuckle or 2..Have fun enjoy your day
Reply:silk....b/c it's more real like w/out being real and it floats to the ground
Reply:sick people hate real flowers
Reply:Freeze or latex.

Silk roses can look amazing but once you take them apart the single artificial petals always look fake in pics for some reason no matter how good they are.

Perhaps use an alternative to petals since you don't like real flowers....lavendar, leaves, artifical snow, something like that.
Reply:Silk is better - less likely to stain or damage anything. Check out ebay - they have a lot of really hard to find colors at cheap prices.
Reply:Make sure you are allowed to drop petals. Many places don't allow it anymore because of the mess. Michaels sells silk rose petals in all colors and they are very pretty. The have the color and an iridiscent one in the package.
Reply:I've never heard of any one who actually hates flowers. I'm hoping you have allergies and not just a black heart.

In case you still care, freeze dried rose petals don't pollute as much as silk flowers in their creation. I feel I must warn you, however, they are from real flowers. If its any consolation, they're dead.
Reply:freeze dried rose petals might create a mess, they are very fragile. silk would be an easy clean up and i believe they sell some at Joanns or Micheals.
Reply:If you have an outdoor wedding, many places won't allow silk. I used freeze dried outside, and they didn't crumble into tiny pieces either. You just leave them in the bathroom when you shower and they soften up before you use them. I just googled freeze dried petals and came up with tons of sites.

How do you clean?
Blow the dust off with your hair dryer then give it a blast of hairspray for shine and perk up.
Reply:Wow thats a good one maybe a blow dryer on low. Be careful back the blow dryer up if starts to blow off flowers.Good luck!
Reply:i've always gave my plants flowers, etc. a shower, then leave them in there overnight to dry
Reply:Feather duster. There is a spray can cleaner that is available just for dried flower arrangements.
Reply:Try lightly vacuuming them. If it doesn't disturb them!
Reply:Throw them out. Having dead flowers is bad Feng Shui. Buy a live plant for the window sill.

How do you harvest calendula seeds?

can you pick the seeds after the flowers die and dry them yourself inside or do you have to let them dry on the flower outside?

How do you harvest calendula seeds?
For viable seeds you will need to let the flowers dry on the plant...the seeds are not fully formed when the flower dies.

When the seeds are dried store them in a brown paper bag...never use plastic to store seeds as they will mildew.
Reply:I would pick them as they just start to die and store them.

check the link below for harvesting

How do you keep gluten free cakes from going stale?

I find that when I bake cakes or muffins with gluten free flower, they dry out and become stale within a day or so. Are there any secrets in keeping them fresher?

How do you keep gluten free cakes from going stale?
Try adding an extra egg or two depending on the size of the cake and/or a little vegetable oil. Other than that, keeping them sealed up tight with as little air exposure as possible.
Reply:Put cakes into plastic bag,and leave in the fridge, make sure the bag is closed so the air don't get to the cakes.

My okra are flowering but most fruits are drying off after the flower falls and not producing fruit. Why?

Most of the flowers are beautiful but many fruits just brown and dry away after the flower falls (or doesn't even fall!) I have just got 4-5 okras from 10-12 flowers. What is happening?

My okra are flowering but most fruits are drying off after the flower falls and not producing fruit. Why?
Okra is similar to tomatoes and peppers in that they produce better when night time temperatures and rainfall amounts are within their ideal (but I do not remember what those ideals are). Otherwise, the fruit will not form well even though it flowers.

Perhaps wait for a few weeks to see if it is just not quite the right conditions yet (they sometimes start flowering before they really produce).

Also, try limiting the number of blooms (which means you need to plant more) per plant by pinching some off.
Reply:Blight or wilt due to too much rain or crops not being rotated. No cure.
Reply:Has it rained alot, rain will kill the flower, and the flower is the okra, the flower should not fall off, it should turn into the okra. Also cut the okra off when they are about 2" long, sometimes this will help the plant to produce.
Reply:Okra cannot be planted until the soil is 90 degrees. So says my gardening guru uncle.

How do u press flowers in a book without having mold? and these flowers are completely dry but they still mold

you need to get some powdered desicant to dip them in first then put them between two layers of tissue paper, then put them in the book to press...the desicant absorbs all the excess moisture so they won't mold...(desicant is the silica gel that you find in purses or shoe boxes when you first buy them) you can get cans of the stuff from craft stores like michaels

Why do my roses never last?

Even when I cut the stems, add the plant food and have fresh water, they dry up and die before they open. Almost like how a pressed flower is dried.

Why do my roses never last?
Use tepid water (a tiny bit warmer than room temp) and when you cut the stems, do it under running water so they never have a chance to seal up. Ever since I've been doing this my roses last just great! Also change the water often.
Reply:roses love the sun. do you give it that. and you can also cut too much off. may be the ground is too wet or too dry which would have that affect on the plant. if you still have problems, then call your local florest.
Reply:Give them Dasani water. That makes them last longer.

Prolonging a Flower Arrangement?

The flower arrangements in our office reception tables are changed by the florist every week, even though we have an airconditioned enviorenment, we find the flowers drying up ahead of the 7 days period (due to the dry atmosphere and hot weather), is there something we can do like cover the bouquets in polythene overnight to prolong freshness, or put some chemical in the water, or any other domestic tactic you know off... etc ???

Prolonging a Flower Arrangement?
I have heard if you put an aspirin in the water it will last longer something, make sure that the arrangement has plenty of water. Good luck
Reply:tell the florist that you would like to have the arrangements made with longer lasting flowers whenever possible.

They can do a lot to chose flowers that are likely hold up better.

They should be using flower conditioner/food in the water when they are arranging them. They might be able to give you extra pack of it to use during the week.

If you notice the water getting cloudy or dirty, change it.Cooler temperatures will help slow the aging process.

Make sure they aren't getting in sun or being hit by a bright(halogen type) light, the heat will age them.

Remove spent flowers.

don't cover them that will speed the deterioration.

You could put them on the floor at night, it is cooler on the floor.

Does anyone know the best way to preserve a fresh flower, not dry it, I want to maintain the color, thanks?

I have a pink rose from a recent funeral and would like to keep it just as it is now

Does anyone know the best way to preserve a fresh flower, not dry it, I want to maintain the color, thanks?
Put it in glycerin. It will hold form color and even flexibility. Oh, not dip under, but like you would put it in water normally.

Results may vary but many flowers handle this very well.

How can I air dry fresh flowers?

Flowers are a symbol of beauty and exude freshness all around. However, fresh flowers have a short shelf life. Drying flowers using the right technique can result in preserving them as close to their original form, flexibility, color and texture. There are many methods that are used to dry flowers.

Pressing is the most popular form of drying fresh flowers. Flowers are neatly straightened and kept between sheets of paper and weighted. This ensures that the pigments are not lost and the color is retained. Special devices called plant presses give excellent results. This method should be adopted when the flowers are fresh, so that they remain so in the dried form. Violets, pansies, larkspur and ferns preserve well when pressed in this manner. These dried flowers can be arranged in framed displays.

Air-drying, also known as "hang and dry" method, is the oldest and simplest method for preserving flowers. The flowers are collected, tied and then hung upside down in a warm, dry place. Since the flowers are dried in air, the method is referred to as "air-drying." The darkness helps retain the color of the flowers. Flowers such as baby's breath, cattail, celosia, dock, goldenrod, heather and pussy willow preserve well when stored this way. Blue and yellow flowers retain their color whereas pink flowers fade.

Flowers are also dried using desiccants. Embedding the flowers in a granular, desiccating material is considered the best all around method to dry flowers. The flowers are covered with the desiccant so that their form will be maintained.

Water drying is also used to preserve fresh flowers. Here, stems of the flowers are initially placed in a couple of inches of water, the water is allowed to evaporate and be taken up by the cut flowers. The container and flowers should be in a dry, warm and dark location. Hydrangeas, yarrow, bells-of-Ireland and celosia dry well with this method.

Most people pursue drying and preserving flowers as a hobby. Even with the increased popularity of synthetic flowers, many people still prefer the real flowers preserved in a lifelike manner.

Drying flowers is an inexpensive way to achieve a beautiful arrangement of flowers that would normally cost you approximately $35-$50 dollars in a retail or craft store. The process is really quite simple, and you can customize your own dried flower arrangements with the sorts of flowers that are pleasing to you. Dried flowers make excellent centerpieces, gifts, and bridal bouquets and wedding gift bouquets; the bride will get to save her bouquet forever if the arrangement is dried, and the wedding party will have a bouquet that will also last forever.

The technique is simple. First of all gather the flowers to be dried. The best flowers for drying are wildflowers, Roses, Lavender, Larkspur, Dahlias, Geraniums, Marigolds, and just about any flower that has a seed head (Poppy seed heads for example). However, experiment with different varieties of flowers, you may get a wonderful surprise.

I have always gone into my garden (and sometimes along the roadside where there are multitudes of beautiful flowers), and snipped the flowers right as they are about to bloom. Cut the flower so that quite a bit of the stem is intact. Cut more flowers than you think you will need, because some of the flowers will not survive the drying process, and will come out rather hideous looking. Remove all foliage from the flowers. If you like, you can also save pods, berries, and small branches from the flowers as they make a nice addition to the dried flower arrangement. The pods, berries and branches can be dried in a small bowl.

Next, take 4-5 of flowers and their stems and place them in a paper bag with salt. Give the bag a few shakes, and remove the flowers and stems. The salt will help the flower to keep its color. Lay the flowers outside (if it is hot and dry) for a day or so, as they must be completely dry before you hang them in a dry place. If it is raining, or not very hot, then you can place the flowers on a table in an attic, or in a room that is without a fan or air-conditioning, and the room should be void of dust and sunlight.

Next arrange your flowers into bunches of 5-10 (depending on the size of the flowers). At the very bottom of the stem, bind the flowers into a makeshift bouquet and tie loosely with string. Don't tie the stems too tight, or use rubber bands, as this will cut into the stem and the flower will begin to decay and discolor too quickly.

You will need a room that does not have dust or direct sunlight. For this purpose, I have always used my attic. Attics are great places, as they tend to be dark, dust-free. and dry. Don't use a basement, as they tend to be damp and humid. You can also use an unused, empty closet.

In an attic, you will usually have overhead beams. On the beams, you can hammer nails directly into the beams, and hang the flowers upside down by the string. If you need to use an empty closet, you can hang the flowers from old hangers, or stick-on hooks attached to the walls within the closet. Hanging the flowers upside down will allow the flowers to take on a life of their own; they may curl in unusual shapes, and develop unique winding curves.

Depending on the type of flower, air-drying can take up to 4-6 weeks. You'll know when the flower has completely dried because the stems will be brown, and the flower petals will have closed, and display a hue of it's former color. The flowers will also have a crunchy feel to them.

Once the flowers are dried, you have a variety of choices. You can make your own flower arrangements, by placing the flowers in vases of colored glass. You may also tie them together with a pretty ribbon and display them on the wall. Giving bouquets of dried flowers is a beautiful gesture, as the flowers will never rot or die.

Some people like to keep collections of dried flowers in baskets placed on top of a mantle piece, or on the hearth near a fireplace. These are lovely presentations, however, take caution if you have pets because some of the flowers, even dried can be poisonous to some pets. Check with your veterinarian.

Experiment with different sorts of flowers, as some flowers seem to dry better than others, and in some climates, particular flowers can be successfully dried, where as in other climates, the chore is impossible. Be creative, and have fun!

How can I air dry fresh flowers?
As beautiful as those flower deliveries look when they arrive on your doorstep, you can bet your money on the fact that they won't stay that way. Eventually they will wither and die. If you want to preserve their beauty and keep them forever, try air-drying them. To air dry fresh flowers follow these steps:

Arrange them when they look nice—long before they start to brown or wilt.

Tie a small number of stems together and hang them upside down.

Remove the leaves and hang the flowers in a dark, dry venilated place that is cool.

The drying period will take a while so leave the arrangement be for a week or two. Then, check to see if the flowers are crisp.

When the flowers are dry, store them in boxes or paper bags.
Reply:Take them out of the vase, tie a string around the stems, and hang them from the ceiling, and then wait for a few days or more.

What's wrong with my cosmos flowers?

I live in New Mexico, and it's VERY hot and dry right now(strong sun %26amp; high elevation). My cosmos keep dying--turning wilty, then brown, no matter how much water I give them, or whether they're inside or outside (I live in an apt., so they're in pots). What do you advise?

What's wrong with my cosmos flowers?
cosmos need poor soil and little watering after they have established themselves. the problem is called canker. it is a fungus .it appears when fungi in the soil attacks the plants water conducting.take out the dead flowers and throw them away. if you still have a sizeable amount of healthy ones left, thin them out as much as possible. the fungus hates air circulation.then dig in lots of compost into the soil.it gives off ethylene gas that will discourage the growth of fungus. to keep them fungus free spray them once a week with a solution of 3 tbsp of apple cider vinegar in one gallon of water.spray them in the morning.night time spraying leaves them wet and the mold likes wet.
Reply:Containers here are the pits! Due to our hot, dry conditions the plants need water at least daily and sometimes twice......depends on the pot size. Larger seem to hold the water.......until the soil shrinks back from the sides and not allowing water to penetrate the soil........check the soil for shrinkage.

Also check the soil......could be the whole root ball is not getting wet with each watering..........and I assume the pots have drainage so they don't water log the plants.

Insects.....spider mites can wipe out a garden, either in the ground or in containers, in a matter of days. I wonder if you problem might also be mites.....the damage mimics drought injury.

Have you tried adding the water holding gels to the potting mix? They may help.

Also the pots themselves get pretty darn not which the roots hate. Double potting, that is putting a pot within another pot helps keep the roots cooler.
Reply:Hi, there,

I live in hot West Texas so I know your weather conditions are about like mine. I don't think the roots of your comos are getting the water. Water has to flow out the bottom of containers for flowers to be watered correctly.

'Bright Lights' cosmos are bred for our hot dry areas. I grow them each year in containers. They are about three feet long and a foot wide. One foot deep.

I have also grown them in larger round containers that are 14 inches across the top of the containers. These take about 25 lb bag of potting soil each.

Do not fertilize Bright Lights, and only water when the soil is dry. You can test this by sticking you finger down into the soil a couple or more inches. Flood with water if dry. Let the water flow out the bottom of the containers. This will get the roots watered. Than do not water again until dry.

Bright Lights needs several hours of sun in order to bloom

As the flowers start fading, cut or pinch them off. This will give you more flowers.

If you want to collect seeds for next spring's planting, do not cut off the flowers starting the first of August. Let them go to seed. Let the seeds turn dark brown/black on the stem and then cut them off and let them dry for a week or more. Store them in a dry place such as a box or an envelope.

I use Miracle-Gro potting soil. I use the one with plant food already in it. I also use moisture crystals, or buy Miracle-Gro with moisture added. This will keep you from having to water so often and will help keep the roots watered.

Happy gardening to you.
Reply:i advise trying another plant.. it sounds to me like, because the plants are in pots, they are drying too much.. too fast .. you would need to keep soil moist...NOT WET... for the entire season, which might mean a qt of water every hour during the day.,, who has time for that?

try something different although cosmos' are gorgeous plants to have:)

happy gardening

Where do the seeds from a gerber daisy located to use for the following year to germinate?

i kept the flower and dried it out and stored it in paper bag

Where do the seeds from a gerber daisy located to use for the following year to germinate?
Gerber Daisy's are just like sunflowers.

Their seeds can be found in the fuzzy part in the middle of the flower. (Make sure the flower bloomed all the way, if unsure plant the bloom as listed below. You can thin them out later.)

Planting tips: Plant them pointed end down, it takes 15-25 days to germinate. It takes 6 months from germination to blooming. Do not over water. Good Luck!

Question about pruning rose bushes?

I have just bought a few rose bushes and was wondering how to prune them. They have some dead flowers on them and the stem were the dried up flowers are has turned brown (dead I guess) too. Do I just cut right under the brown part? I not real sure how and where to cut at.

Any help would be great! That for your time and information!

I really don't know alot about roses, but I think they are so pretty and I wanted to at their beauty to my gardens. So I would love any info on how to keep the beautiful and to continue to bloom.

Thank you!

Question about pruning rose bushes?
Don't do any real pruning this time of year; just snip off the dead stuff and plant the bushes. You do need to cut into the green portion slightly.

Since they are new, you probably won't need to prune them for the first year. Remove dead flowers when they fade while the plant is blooming; this will keep the plant from setting seed, and triggering the plant to quit blooming.

After they have bloomed next spring/summer, then you will want to prune them properly. Cut away any dead material; also remove any stems/branches that point "inward" into the body of the bush, rather than outward.

Be sure to use a systemic fungicide on your roses, as well as bone meal if your soil needs it. The best people to talk to are those at a local nursery; they will know about the needs of roses in your area of the country.

Enjoy!
Reply:i wouldn't cut it down till fall or next spring.Mine were drying up cause it has been a drought. I have 1 little rose coming back. Yes u cut out the brown branches if no green leaves r present. I cut the dead buds off. It's called deadheading. When u first plant them put a rotting banana peel in hole first. Some people put used coffee grounds around the plants. I use miracle grow that u mix with water put around roses. Buy a couple wood trellises to support them later on.
Reply:You'll notice the # of lealets varies . Find the first leaf , below the flower, that has 5 leaflets . Cut just above this . If you cut higher , the stem of the subsequent rose will tend to be weak .
Reply:Most every has good advice, but roses are tougher then they look. There are two reasons for pruning. There is general pruning and Autumn pruning.

General Pruning: You do this to remove any dead or dying canes or spent flowers.

It is true that you need to pick a set of five leaves, but not necessarily the first set. Pick a set of five that are pointing outward because that will be the direction of a new cane and flowers. If you choose one pointing inward then your canes can cross and will cause other problems. Cut the cane at an angle like this (/) about 1/4" above the five leaf set. It is okay to do this with each cane and especially if the cane is dying. It is also okay to do this throughout the growing season because it promotes new growth.

Autumn Pruning: Any time between the first freeze of Autumn and the last freeze of winter you can seriously prune your rose down to about 2 feet. This will create a fuller, lusher plant for the new season. Once again you will want to cut at an angle. However, instead of cutting above a five leaf set, this time you will want to cut right above a node which will resemble a small, reddish, slightly pointed bump on the cane. Like the five leaf set, make sure the node is pointing outward.

I hope this helps.
Reply:I will tell you how to prune the roses. First of all cut the blooms back to the first set of five leaves down the stem from the dead bloom. If there are crossed or dead limbs --trim them out. After you have trimmed the roses back to the first set of five leaves--- put some miracle grow -that is 1 -tablespoon to 1 -gallon water and soak the ground around the rose bush well. I use osmocote fertilizer around mine about every 6 Weeks while they are blooming.Do not wet the leaves of the roses as this will cause black rot which is unsightly and can ruin your rose bush. Please take good care of your rose bush and it will be good to you. It has to be petted and cared for to bloom well for you. Roses are the most beautiful flowers--and be sure to give them full sunshine if you want them to grow nicely.
Reply:Most of these answers are good ones. I can, however, tell you how to avoid much of the work of growing roses. Look into planting one of the varieties of "Earthkind" roses. Knock Out is the most popular but there are many varieties and colors. They require little care after planting if you do that right. They are resistant to the pests, both insects and fungus, that plague most roses and require little fertilizer if you do a good job of planting using compost and mulch.

I heard that you can dry used flower bulbs and save to plant next year. How does one do this?

if you wanted to you could just leave the bulbs in the gorund for next year and not worry about them. it is a lot easyer.

I heard that you can dry used flower bulbs and save to plant next year. How does one do this?
http://www.gardenbuddies.com/cgi-bin/for...
Reply:After the plant itself has died off for the season let it sit for a couple of weeks and dry out. Carefully dig up the bulb and pull off any remaining plant from the top. Shake off the dirt and put the bulbs in a brown paper bag and store in the garage or any dry area til early next spring.

When the time comes just replant them. Better yet, if your soil has good drainage and is healthy leave them where they are. They will come up again next year on thier own.
Reply:After the leaves have already stored up energy for next year you can dig up the bulb when you see the leaves browning up then cut any leaves left on it off and store the bulb in dry saw dust, peat moss, etc. and keep it in a cool dry space in your basement or somewhere where it is dark... then just wait for next year...oh it also might help if you label your bulbs so you will remember if you can...

How should we promote our business?

I asked this question a bit ago...but I think that (while I did get some good responses) it would be most helpful for people to know what type of business we have.

www.bluedogbeads.com

It's all custom jewelry made from dried flowers from any occasion. Most of our business does come from people who have lost a loved one...we use the flowers from the funeral to make the beads. Everything we make is hand made with the exception of the sterling and gold (obviously).

How do we get the word out?

Someone we know suggested that we place our brochure on the windshields of people while they were in the funeral...a little tacky I think lol....

How should we promote our business?
Hi! Your jewelry is quite attractive and should do quite well when you find your market.

I believe the best market for you to target first would be the bridal market. (I would concentrate on only one market at a time initially). Brides are often very interested in jewelry and in keepsake type merchandise.

I would start by making a list of all of the bridal salons in your area along with their phone numbers. Set up an appointment to meet with the owners of the salons.

Ask the owners if they would be interested in carrying a display of your jewelry for prospective brides for a small portion of the sales. It's a nice source of additional income for the bridal store without them having to make an investment in merchandise.

You can check back every few days to pick up the orders to fulfill and collect your portion of the payment. It's a winning situation for you as you don't have to do alot of marketing and can concentrate on crafting the jewelry and fulfilling orders.

If you need some more ideas for marketing handmade jewelry, check out this free blog:

There are some ideas here you may not have thought of.

Best of luck to you with your venture. :-)
Reply:Well you have a couple ways to do it, Get a full website that allows a shopping cart, promotional capabilities, ordering, etc.

Also you can promote on myspace. I run a promotional company for that does website design and myspace promotions, we have worked with a few companies who have had profiles on myspace as well as musicians, and they have seen a drastic jump in their sales, and profile views.

We have some musicians that had 138 friends when they came to us and now have over 7,000 friends and 10,000 music plays in less than 30 days of our promotion service.
Reply:I would recommend that you consider joining your local Chamber of Commerce. Most Chambers offer resources specifically designed to help small business owners grow their businesses. If there is more than one funeral home in your area, consider making an appointment with each one, let them know that you only want 15 minutes of their time and let them know about your products. Maybe consider notifying the various religious organizations in your area (churches) and let them know about your products. A brochure is a great idea and yes you can get them professionally designed and made at a reasonable cost. Consider using someone on a contract basis to design and print the brochure for you~

Good luck with your business!!
Reply:eBay can bring in some good leads and the cost to list an ad is under $5. Yahoo Auctions, Bid4Assets and some other auction sites don't charge at all.

If you need capital for your expanding business take a look at the Sturzstrom Funding Group on Prosper - http://ww.ProsperFiveStar.com. Having an established business puts you in a good position to get a loan from $1000 to $25000. It could give you the extra capital you need to put together a good marketing campaign.
Reply:Saw your website and the jewelry is very good. I would suggest putting the pictures on the home page with urls to your different catagories such as weddings, birthday, baby, graduation, funeral, etc. so people don't have to navigate around to find them.

You may want to see if you can find a few at locations that host wedding receptions, birthday parties, graduation parties, wakes, etc. If you get to know the people who run these places, and they like what you have, you may be able to get them to include one of your items as part of a "package deal". So get to know the people who run these places, let them see what you have. They are a good source for referrals.

If nothing else, they may let you leave a brochures for their customers to see. If you don't have brochures, maybe put together a notebook with photos or a set up small display where you can leave your business cards (assuming you have those).
Reply:This should help you make some money.
